Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) in India – Low cost assisted reproduction option

December 11th, 2009

What is Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)?

IUI treatment

Intrauterine Insemination is one of the more frequently used methods of assisted reproduction in India and world wide; this process involves artificially depositing sperms into the women’s uterus, exactly at the time of ovulation, to promote fertilization. There are other variants of artificial insemination which include intra-vaginal insemination, intra-cervical insemination and intra- tubal insemination. Amongst all the techniques, this technique is used more often for infertile couples. The technique is used to treat several causes of infertility with male partner problems (low sperm count, premature ejaculation, etc) and female partner problems (endometriosis or other reproductive tract problems). Clinical evidence suggests that the success rate of conception after an average of six trials ranges from 60% to 80%. Indian hospitals with their advanced technological infrastructure provide these services at lower costs.

The procedure for Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

  • The female is prescribed fertility drugs to promote ovulation. This is referred to as “stimulated ovulation”. Occasionally the female may not require stimulation of the ovulation

Cryo-shipping of Embryos and Sperm to India for Surrogacy

February 11th, 2009

The process of surrogacy in India involves two visits to India: sperm deposition, IVF, and embryo transfer are done during the first visit, and the next visit is to bring your baby home after the delivery.

Thanks to the embryo and sperm overseas transfer service provided by our partner fertility clinic in India, the first trip may now be totally avoided. On the first trip, the male partner is typically required to stay in Mumbai for 3-5 days, and the female partner has to stay for almost two weeks.

Because of work pressures or any other reason, it may not be possible for everyone to stay so long in India. Cryopreservation and frozen embryo/sperm transfer abroad come to the rescue in such a situation.

What is cryopreservation of embryos and sperm?

Cryopreservation is ‘a process where cells or whole tissues are preserved by cooling to low sub-zero temperatures, such as (typically) 77 K or −196 °C (the boiling point of liquid nitrogen). At these low temperatures, any biological activity, including the biochemical reactions that would lead to cell death, is effectively stopped.’ (Source: Wikipedia.)

Traditional Surrogacy vs. Gestational Surrogacy

January 7th, 2009

Surrogacy refers to the process of third party reproduction wherein a woman agrees to become pregnant and carry someone else’s baby under a contract. Whether the baby has any genetic connection to the surrogate depends on the kind of surrogacy method chosen.

African fertllity symbolSurrogacy in India is legal. It can be availed by heterosexual couples who are unable to bear a child on their own for some medical reason, by same sex couples, and by single men for whom surrogacy is the only way in which parenthood can be achieved. Also visit India Surrogacy Frequently asked questions. (The pic on the left is an African fertility symbol.)

We list below the important features of gestational and traditional surrogacy:

Features of Gestational Surrogacy:

1. Gestational surrogacy is an Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) where the surrogate plays ‘host’ to the embryo that is transferred to her uterus.

2. The embryo is produced through the In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) process, that is, the biological mother’s egg is mixed with the biological father’s sperm in a glass dish in the lab.

3. The process of gestational surrogacy: The surrogate starts taking

Success Rates of Donor Egg IVF in India

January 7th, 2009

Donor egg IVF is a fertility treatment or Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) in which the egg from a donor is subjected to IVF. That is, the egg from the donor is mixed with the sperm from the biological father in the laboratory. If embryos are produced, they are grown in a lab dish and then transferred to the recipient’s uterus. If this results in a pregnancy, the baby thus born will have genetic linkage to the donor of the egg.

India donor egg IVF program is anonymous and highly successful. The chief reason for its success are highly experienced and well-qualified infertility experts.

We present below a comparison of successful pregnancies achieved with and without donor eggs. This data is from the top fertility clinic in India, which is also Medical Tourism Corporation’s partner clinic:

The first chart shows the number of ART cycles and the % of clinical pregnancy rates without the use of donor eggs. That is, the patient used her own eggs. As you can see, the success rate is well below 40%.

Single men and surrogacy

January 2nd, 2009

Single men, who want to be fathers but do not wish to enter into relationships with women, are increasingly choosing the surrogacy route. Men being single parents is not new, of course: widowers and divorced men have always brought up children on their own. But the idea of single men wishing to be parents through surrogacy is definitely new. Single & Gay men are increasingly heading to India for surrogacy as an way to have children.

Surrogacy for single men

Single fatherhood through surrogacy

The desire for fatherhood does not have to be necessarily connected to or dependent on a relationship with a woman. A large number of men opting for surrogacy are gay, though there are straight men, too, who wish to be fathers and not have a woman partner. Women chose to be single parents almost two decades ago and it now looks like men want similar status for themselves.

As with any new idea, this one too is going to take some time to be accepted, but is on its way there. Society is beginning to see that men, too, can have strong fatherly instincts and want
