Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) in India – Low cost assisted reproduction option
December 11th, 2009What is Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)?

Intrauterine Insemination is one of the more frequently used methods of assisted reproduction in India and world wide; this process involves artificially depositing sperms into the women’s uterus, exactly at the time of ovulation, to promote fertilization. There are other variants of artificial insemination which include intra-vaginal insemination, intra-cervical insemination and intra- tubal insemination. Amongst all the techniques, this technique is used more often for infertile couples. The technique is used to treat several causes of infertility with male partner problems (low sperm count, premature ejaculation, etc) and female partner problems (endometriosis or other reproductive tract problems). Clinical evidence suggests that the success rate of conception after an average of six trials ranges from 60% to 80%. Indian hospitals with their advanced technological infrastructure provide these services at lower costs.
The procedure for Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)
- The female is prescribed fertility drugs to promote ovulation. This is referred to as “stimulated ovulation”. Occasionally the female may not require stimulation of the ovulation cycle and is referred to as “ natural ovulation”
- Using imaging support like Ultrasound, at the exact time of ovulation, sperms collected from the male partner are artificially injected into the uterus using a catheter or a tube. The sperms injected are initially subjected to a procedure called “sperm wash”, which helps in selection of the best quality and the most motile sperms. The artificial insemination is done between the 12th to the 18th day of the menstrual cycle, depending upon the maturity of the ovarian follicles.Intrauterine insemination is a simple procedure and doesn’t require hospitalization or anesthesia.
- No special precautions are required after the procedure
Intrauterine Insemination Limitations
The technique may result in cramp like pains, when the catheter is inserted into the uterus. Also the use of fertility drugs may cause excessive stimulation of the ovaries and the ovarian fluid could leak into the abdomen.
Intrauterine Insemination in India
India has several JCI and ISO certified hospitals that provide IUI treatment at fairly low cost, whilst ensuring same quality of care. Further going to India can be coupled with leisure travel across the country.
