Cryo-shipping of Embryos and Sperm to India for Surrogacy

The process of surrogacy in India involves two visits to India: sperm deposition, IVF, and embryo transfer are done during the first visit, and the next visit is to bring your baby home after the delivery.

Thanks to the embryo and sperm overseas transfer service provided by our partner fertility clinic in India, the first trip may now be totally avoided. On the first trip, the male partner is typically required to stay in Mumbai for 3-5 days, and the female partner has to stay for almost two weeks.

Because of work pressures or any other reason, it may not be possible for everyone to stay so long in India. Cryopreservation and frozen embryo/sperm transfer abroad come to the rescue in such a situation.

What is cryopreservation of embryos and sperm?

Cryopreservation is ‘a process where cells or whole tissues are preserved by cooling to low sub-zero temperatures, such as (typically) 77 K or −196 °C (the boiling point of liquid nitrogen). At these low temperatures, any biological activity, including the biochemical reactions that would lead to cell death, is effectively stopped.’ (Source: Wikipedia.)

Success Rates of Donor Egg IVF in India

Donor egg IVF is a fertility treatment or Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) in which the egg from a donor is subjected to IVF. That is, the egg from the donor is mixed with the sperm from the biological father in the laboratory. If embryos are produced, they are grown in a lab dish and then transferred to the recipient’s uterus. If this results in a pregnancy, the baby thus born will have genetic linkage to the donor of the egg.

India donor egg IVF program is anonymous and highly successful. The chief reason for its success are highly experienced and well-qualified infertility experts.

We present below a comparison of successful pregnancies achieved with and without donor eggs. This data is from the top fertility clinic in India, which is also Medical Tourism Corporation’s partner clinic:

The first chart shows the number of ART cycles and the % of clinical pregnancy rates without the use of donor eggs. That is, the patient used her own eggs. As you can see, the success rate is well below 40%.

Single men and surrogacy

Single men, who want to be fathers but do not wish to enter into relationships with women, are increasingly choosing the surrogacy route. Men being single parents is not new, of course: widowers and divorced men have always brought up children on their own. But the idea of single men wishing to be parents through surrogacy is definitely new.

Single fatherhood through surrogacy

The desire for fatherhood does not have to be necessarily connected to or dependent on a relationship with a woman. A large number of men opting for surrogacy are gay, though there are straight men, too, who wish to be fathers and not have a woman partner. Women chose to be single parents almost two decades ago and it now looks like men want similar status for themselves.

As with any new idea, this one too is going to take some time to be accepted, but is on its way there. Society is beginning to see that men, too, can have strong fatherly instincts and want to have a baby who has their genes. The American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) in its
