Individuals stricken with multiple sclerosis are excited about a new theory that the often-crippling disease may be treatable with a simple surgery.  The new and still being tested procedure is known as liberation procedure.  Although, it is not available in most countries, it is being offered in India by some leading hospitals to be performed by experienced vascular surgeons.

What is the Liberation Procedure?

Dr. Paola Zamboni, a professor of medicine at the University of Ferrara in Italy, has theorized that chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency (CCSVI) is the underlying cause of multiple sclerosis.  CCSVI can be explained as a vascular condition where veins draining blood from the brain are either blocked or malformed in some way.  Angioplasty can be used, he says, to clear this blockage. His findings and surgical alternative as a way to treat multiple sclerosis is also called the Zamboni Procedure.

Researchers including in India continue to test the new theory that it could be a vascular disease, which will represent a major shift from the traditional thinking that multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune condition.
