Radiation Oncology Abroad

November 30th, 2009

Amman in Jordan, Istanbul in Turkey, India, Mexico & South Korea are some of the popular medical tourism destinations where people travel for surgical & radiation therapy for oncology treatments.

Radiation oncology is the science of using ionized radiations in optimally favorable doses for the treatment and management of cancers. Radiation Oncology is used in association with chemotherapy (i.e. the use of drugs) and surgery (i.e. surgical removal of the malignant tissues) as an effective measure to manage different forms of tumors.
Radiation therapy is the first line of treatment preferred in association with chemotherapy for the management of tumors and cancers.

The role of Radiation therapy depends upon the focus of the treatment plan. It could be,

  • Curative Therapy: Radiotherapy is used for complete removal of the tumor cells. This is possible for small sized tumors with minimal or no metastasis.
  • Palliative Therapy: Radiotherapy is used to reduce the severity of symptoms, pain and discomfort, however the disease may continue to progress. This is in case of cancers that have been detected late or with wide spread and extensive metastasis across the body making surgical removal impractical.
  • Neo-adjuvant Therapy: Radiotherapy is

Precautions to take when on a Medical Vacation to Mexico

July 29th, 2009

Although Mexico hospitals provides one of the best international medical tourism value, some precautions are suggested to assure a trouble free medical trip.

sea-side-in-mexico

  • Gang wars between drug lords and violent crime in Mexico are not uncommon. The gang wars are not targeted at tourists and there is no evidence that they are targeted at any nationality, but by being at the wrong place at the wrong time, sometimes one may get affected.
  • To avoid street crime & avoid being lost in the wrong place, it is suggested that medical tourist use hospital arranged transport or use authorized prepaid taxi services.  Visit to nightclubs, bars & such are not suggested.
  • If an ATM must be used, it is suggested they be accessed at large protected facilities, rather than at glass-enclosed, highly visible ATMs on streets.  Most Medical Tourism Corporation’s network hospitals in Mexico have ATM’s & banking facilities inside the hospitals premises.
  • Though your Mexico doctor and the medical staff at the hospital may speak fluent English, Spanish is the main language on the street.
  • It’s best that you do not drive on your own in Mexico, as the standards of road safety

Advantages of Hip Resurfacing Surgery

May 25th, 2009

Life after hip resurfacingHip resurfacing is a technique invented specifically for younger patients with hip problems and has some advantages over hip replacement. Conventional total hip replacement, while being a good option for an elderly person (above 70 years), can be a poor choice for young patients as it will fail rapidly.

The hip resurfacing operation is an alternative to hip replacement and has 5 crucial advantages.

The first is that no plastic (polyethylene) is used like in conventional hip replacement. Since an anatomical sized ‘metal on metal’ bearing is used, it lasts for a very long time, manifold  that of conventional hip replacement and is extremely popular in Europe, Australia and some parts of Asia. The anatomy and bio-mechanics after resurfacing mimic a normal hip very closely.

The second advantage is post operatively patients are encouraged to lead an active life after hip resurfacing, and must play some sport, do swimming etc. No activity is restricted including sitting on the floor, crossing legs etc. In short, it behaves like a  normal  hip enabling patients to return to their normal lifestyle. In contrast,

Rotator Cuff Surgery Mexico

May 10th, 2009

Rotator cuff repair MexicoRotator cuff surgery in Mexico is within the budget of an average American, who doesn’t have insurance, and is accessible quick enough to a Canadian or British national, who may otherwise have to line up for it in their home countries.

Medical tourism in Mexico is much sought after for various orthopedic and other kinds of surgeries.

The rotator cuff is made up of these muscles:

  • Supraspinatus muscle
  • Infraspinatus muscle
  • Teres minor muscle
  • Subscapularis muscle

It is the rotator cuff that gives the shoulder joint its full range of motion, but the muscles and tendons that make it up are very small. Also, they are slow to heal when injured or operated on, as this area of the shoulder receives very little blood supply.

Rotator cuff tear or injury might happen in athletes because of increased and constant overhead motion and in non-athletes either because of a traumatic injury or because of wear and tear. It is usually the Supraspinatus muscle that is affected in rotator cuff tears, but other muscles, too, might be affected in some cases.

Knee meniscus arthroscopic surgery in Mexico is gaining popularity with people from the US, Canada, and many other countries across the world.

The meniscus is a C-shaped fibrocartilage that acts as a shockabsorber and also helps avoid friction between the femur and the tibia bones that come together to form the knee joint. Thus, its role is understandably huge in activities like walking, standing, etc.

Meniscus tears may develop either as a result of trauma or wear and tear in patients with knee arthritis. Traumatic tears in younger, more athletic patients, are also sometimes associated with ACL tears.

There are various types of meniscal tears, depending on their position on the meniscus:

  • Vertical longitudinal tears
  • Transverse or radial tears
  • Horizontal cleavage tears
  • Flap tears

Tears on the outer portion of the meniscus heal faster than those on the inner, as the latter lacks good blood supply.

Who Should Consider Surgery for Meniscal Tears in Mexico?

  • Persons with longitudinal meniscal tears rather than those with degenerative horizontal or flap tears.
  • Tears shouldn’t be longer than 1-2 cm.
  • Patients who are willing to comply with the knee rehabilitation program post-surgery.

What is the Treatment Procedure to Repair a Torn Meniscus?

Low Cost Gastric Bypass MexicoGastric bypass in Mexico is one of the popular surgical weight loss solutions people in the USA are seeking abroad. Also called Roux-en-Y, this surgery, if done in Mexico, is a fraction of the cost in the US or Canada, and involves no wait times.

Steep rise in medical costs in the US, lack of insurance cover for gastric bypass, and long wait times in countries like Canada motivate people to look for low cost, hassle-free obesity surgery in Mexico.

Factors in Favor of Gastric Bypass in Mexico

  • Low cost: In the US, gastric bypass surgery can cost up to $25,000 or more, depending on your health conditions and other factors. Often, there is no cover for bariatric surgeries, though this is changing slowly. And even if your health plan does cover it, there could be high co-pay. But when Roux-en-Y surgery is less than half the US cost, it begins to make sense to even people with insurance.
  • Proximity: Mexico is the closest top-quality medical tourism destination to the US and Canada. You can fly, drive, or

People considering hip resurfacing abroad are bound to have many questions, especially about activity levels post-surgery recovery. This article will examine whether patients can take up sports activities like rock-climbing and other outdoor sport after their hip resurfacing surgery in India, Mexico, Costa Rica and other reputed medical tourism locations.

Hip Resurfacing Recovery & Outdoor Sports Activity

Many candidates for hip resurfacing are still in the prime of life, so concerns about activity levels are common.

  • Majority of hip resurfacing patients can return home in four to six days after surgery.
  • As with other surgeries, patients need to be careful not to contract infections. Later in life, if patients need to be operated on or even have dental work done, they should inform the doctor about their hip resurfacing surgery.
  • After hip rehabilitation, patients experience much better range of motion and strength in the hip joint. After about a year or so, they can get back to their activity levels pre-arthritis or pre-trauma. Ultimately what you can do depends on what you used to do before arthritis developed.
  • Patients who were into swimming, walking, gardening and driving can return to these
